Slavers: the memory of a global crime.
That mist, this silence
The exhibition That Mist, This Silence by Judith Prat reconstructs Spain’s silenced slaveholding memory. Through in-depth research and a visual journey across key sites of the transatlantic slave trade, Prat follows the route of traffickers from Africa and Cuba to Spain, revealing the structural influence of slavery on contemporary economies and societies.
The photographs portray archives, landscapes, and people, but also the invisible scars that persist in our present, confronting the complicity of institutions and economic systems with this hidden past. Beyond oppression, the project also highlights Black resistance, maroon communities, and the struggles of enslaved women.
That Mist, This Silence seeks to spark debate and shed light on a silenced history, calling for the historical justice that remains necessary today.
